Nicolas and Germain took their time to construct a musical universe centered around the holy triptych of pop music : melodies, rythms and harmonies. « Moderne, their first record », was released in 2006 and received a very positive feedback. The reviews are praising the band’s abi lity to conceal quality lyrics and music, french traditional songwriting and english songcraft. Gilles Verlant, official Serge Gainsbourg biographer, praised the album to the skies. 2007 : after touring, the duo writes 10 new songs which will constitute their new record : « Les Rastas et les Punks ». There is no reggae or punk on this release. The title is an hommage to the imprint leaved by those two styles of the end of the 70’s on pop-music. From the rastas, Nicholson borrows the spirit of experience, the love of intrumental songs and sonic landscapes. From the punks, the do-it-yourself and the innovative spirit. The band home-recorded their album, played all the instruments (vintage synths, fender rhodes, bass, guitars, tape echos…) and mixed the album themselves. In terms of musical style, even if the band is far from reggae grooves and distorted guitars, nicholson always mixes subtility and efficiency, somewhere between Etienne Daho’s french pop, Damon Albarn and Air. The duo claims the legacy of french artists who always wanted to mix french language and luxurious arrangements, and it’s on this particular point that Nicholson can be compared to Serge Gainsbourg. As the band decided to record and mix their album themselves, they can also be compared to producers as Damon Albarn, Benjamin Biolay and Etienne Daho. |
